M: Péngyoumen. Nǐmen hǎo! Huānyíng shōutīng Xiànzài Xué Hànyǔ. Wǒ shì ML.

S: Wǒ shì Stuart. Now, listen out for how we say ‘a few' here. Last lesson we saw some very cute monkeys.

M: 上一课我们看到了一些很可爱的猴子 shàng yī kè wǒmen kàn dào le yì xiē hěn kě’ài de hóuzi.

S: Now we see a few chickens, a few dogs, and some pigs.

M: 现在我们看到了一些鸡, 一些狗，还有一些猪 xiànzài wǒmen kàn dào le yìxiē jī, yìxiē gǒu, hái yǒu yìxiē zhū.

S: 一些鸡, some chickens, yìxiē jī.

M: 一些狗, a few dogs, yìxiē gǒu.

S: 还有一些猪, and some pigs, hái yǒu yìxiē zhū.

M: And now we've learnt all the 12 dòngwù of the 12-year cycle on the Chinese lunar calendar.

M: The tenth animal is the chicken. 第十个动物是鸡 Say it with me everybody, dì shí ge dòngwù shì jī. Fēicháng hǎo.

S: Chicken, 鸡 JI jī. Remember we learnt it in the restaurant?

M: So what does this mean? 我很喜欢鸡肉. Duì le! I really like chicken. The 肉, of course, means ‘meat'.

S: And what does this mean? 第十一个动物是狗. Méi cuò. The 11th animal is the dog, gǒu, which we met in our recent suspense story. All together, The 11th animal is the dog.

M: Dì shíyī ge dòngwù shì gǒu, dì shíyī ge dòngwù shì gǒu. Hěn hǎo. And the 12th is the pig 第十二个是猪 dì shí èr ge, zuì hòu yí ge, shì zhū.

S: We also met zhū, pig, in the restaurant. Hey, let's see if you can say, I don't eat pork, I only eat chicken. Only, remember, is 只 zhī. Méi cuò. 我不吃猪肉, 我只吃鸡肉 wǒ bù chī zhūròu, wǒ zhǐ chī jīròu.

M: Not true! Stuart eats everything!

S: Right, what else did we learn? Listen.

M: 上一课我们看到了一些很可爱的猴子 shàng yí kè wǒmen kàndào le yī xiē hěn kě’ài de hóuzi.

S: 现在我们看到了一些鸡, 一些狗，还有一些猪

M: Did you hear how we said ‘a few' ‘some'? Yes, it's 一些 YI XIE yì xiē. Like in yìxiē jī, yìxiē gǒu, hái yǒu yìxiē zhū.

S: Yi4xie1 can also mean ‘a little', as when I say, There's only a little, I'm afraid it's not enough. 只有这一些，我怕不够吧.

M: Say it with me, zhǐ yǒu zhè yī xiē, wǒ pà bú gòu ba. Again, zhǐ yǒu zhè yī xiē, wǒ pà bú gòu ba.

S: And let's finish by saying, Now we see a few chickens, a few dogs, and also a few pigs. Yī èr sān.

M: 现在我们看到了一些鸡, 一些狗，还有一些猪 xiànzài wǒmen kàn dào le yìxiē jī, yìxiē gǒu, hái yǒu yìxiē zhū.

S: hěn hǎo, xiànzài wǒmen xià kè. Zài jiàn.
